The Green List
Questions, answered.
How we check free software, how to find the right free tool, and how vendors take part.
For visitors
What is ReallyFree?
A directory of software and resources that are really free to use. We sell nothing and own none of the products listed. We check each product's own page and show you what we found, so you can pick a free tool with confidence.
What do the green, yellow and red dots mean?
Green: really free to use, with no catch we could find. Yellow: free, with one thing worth knowing first, such as ads or an account to create. Red: the free part comes with a price attached, such as a paywall, a subscription or a card on file. Each dot shows the reason beside it.
Who decides the color?
The product's own page does. We read what it says and rate it the same way every time. The color is earned by the product; nobody can buy a different one.
How do I find free tools for what I'm making?
Open one of our topic pages, such as free video editors, free PDF tools or free password managers. Each shows products we have verified as really free. The ReallyFree browser extension shows the dot on any page as you browse. Get the extension.
What if I know a free tool you're missing?
Tell us. Reply to any ReallyFree message with the product's link and we add it to our check queue.
Does ReallyFree cost anything to use?
No. The Green List, the topic pages and the extension are free for everyone.
For vendors
How do I get listed?
If your product is free to use and its page is public, we find it and rate it. You don't need to apply, and listing is free. You can also send us your product's link.
How do I get on green, or move up to green?
Green means the free product has no catch on its own page. If you're yellow, the dot shows the single reason, for example "ads" or "account required." Change the product, or state plainly on the page what is true (for example, that no account is needed or that free is permanent), and we recheck. We rate what is true, so the change has to be real.
Can I show my green status on my own site?
Yes. Once you're green, you can copy our verified free badge to your page. It's free to use and links back to your verdict. See the badge.
What do supporters get?
A labeled "Supporter" card at the top of your topic page: your logo, one line about your product, and a button to your site. Entry is $49.95 a year for one product; Pro is $249.95 a year for up to ten. See how supporters are shown.
Does being a supporter change my color?
No. The dot comes from the product alone and is never for sale. Supporters are placed at the top with a clear label; the verdict stays where it is.
How do supporters join, or how do I ask anything else?
Use the supporter page, or reply to our message. We answer every note ourselves.
